At that time, online adoption was becoming well established in the USA, however it was still a relatively new phenomenon across Europe. As we entered the economic downturn of 2008, this area of our industry was given a huge boost. As companies cut costs from every angle, travel managers sought opportunities to work smarter with their </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Travel Management Company</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. With this desire to reduce costs, came an opportunity to enable travellers to book online as a key mobiliser. As a result, we saw efficiencies brought to the booking process; with travellers having instant access to a range of content in a controlled environment. It also struck a customer service cord, as it enabled travellers (who were already booking their own personal travel) to feel empowered and accountable for their business travel.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bookings through airline apps are on the rise, but while carriers are working to improve their functionality, opinions about the overall quality of the apps remain divided. Travelers either almost always or sometimes use a smartphone app to book flights. Meanwhile, </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/hotelbookingengines_onlinebookingengines.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">mobile bookings</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> account for between 20% and 25% of the airline&#8217;s total direct bookings. That number, is steadily increasing.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As the summer travel season officially gets under way, a growing number of Americans will use their smartphones and tablets to book a trip. This year, digital travel sales in the US will reach $189.62 billion, 40.0% of which will come from mobile devices. In its definition of travel sales, eMarketer includes airline, car rental, cruise, hotel, accommodations (including Airbnb) and transportation. There are two important milestones to watch for in the coming years: By 2019, digital travel sales will surpass $200 billion for the first time, and by 2020, mobile travel sales alone will surpass $100 billion. When it comes to </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/hotelbookingengines_onlinebookingengines.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">booking travel on mobile devices</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, US adults are using smartphones much more heavily than tablets. This year, 57.5 million US adults will use a smartphone to book a trip, up 14.1% over last year. That represents 81.2% of all mobile travel bookers.</span></p>

<p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last-minute travel deals are helping to drive mobile sales</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, as consumers opt to book right away via their smartphones. Consumers are booking more travel on mobile due to larger smartphone screens, easier mobile payment methods and overall time spent habits shifting to mobile. Airlines, hotels and </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/travelbookingsoftware_onlinetravelagency.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">online travel agencies</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> have made both apps and mobile websites easier to use. US adults are not just booking trips via mobile, but they are increasingly researching trips as well.</span></p>
<p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">We need to ask ourselves why business travellers still prefer to book directly with their travel suppliers?</span></i></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Always keen to bring value to their corporate customers, </span><b>TMCs are focusing increasingly on their traveller experience</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Having found gaps in solutions in the market, some TMCs are also successfully building user-friendly, market-focused solutions that are built around their customers’ requirements. Technology has enabled some of these TMCs to even integrate their online and offline environments to improve the user experience and increase agent productivity with some even offering more advanced platforms than the technology giants.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While corporate </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/hotelbookingengines_onlinebookingengines.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">booking technology</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is evolving and developments in products and technology are moving faster than ever – is it a case that these corporate systems are simply struggling to keep up? Perhaps. We have seen that when an online system is able to offer complete content and replicate the consumer’s B2C experience, user adoption is high (up to 96% reported in some markets and systems). Conversely, when content is lacking or the booking process is cumbersome, market share shifts away, travellers book directly with their suppliers and Travel Managers are unable to keep an accurate record of spend and traveller whereabouts, which of course poses risks to the organisation’s travel programme.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Technology providers today offer an evolving range of responses to this conundrum, with door-to-door travel being just one; the concept of the traveller being able to plan their journey from the moment they leave their house, right to the door of their meeting, encourages travellers to book their entire trip in one o</span><a href="https://www.provab.com/onlinebookingsystem_hotelbookingsystem.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">nline booking system</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Another approach is for technology platforms to send booking details for direct supplier bookings back to the TMC to capture spend and traveller tracking using the “Open Booking” concept. While the booking occurs outside of the corporate booking tool, the system still allows tracking of spend and reporting. Other suppliers are providing content hubs for third party suppliers, to “plug in” their content using API connectivity which opens further supplier content and reduces the development effort for the technology provider themselves.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The ever-increasing trend to have expense systems linked into the end-to-end trip process also delivers huge efficiencies to the corporation.  By offering a fully integrated expense system, adoption of the online booking tool also increases, offering a further benefit to the corporation. All things considered, there are a host of technology paths available, and the best route for travellers is perhaps not always clear.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Perhaps most notably, United unveiled what it called a &#8220;reimagined app&#8221; in January. Among the improvements was more seamless access to check-in. Once check-in is completed, flyers have an opportunity to have their boarding pass populate on the app&#8217;s home screen without selecting a boarding pass tab. Later during travel, the app is automatically updated to display onboard entertainment options, directions to connecting gates and information about what carousel the flyer should go to collect baggage. Last week, United won a Webby Award in the &#8220;business and finance&#8221; category for its revamped app. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hawaiian Airlines is another U.S. carrier that unveiled major app changes this year. Its new app, released in March, offers improved graphics, chat and real-time flight notifications. However, some reviewers on Apple&#8217;s app store have panned it for routing the </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/travel-ticketing-system-united-states.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">ticket booking</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> function back through the Hawaiian website. International airlines are also pouring resources into their apps and sometimes coming up with especially creative innovations. In September, for example, Dutch carrier KLM launched an augmented reality function on its app that enables customers to check if their carry-on bags meet the airline&#8217;s size requirements. Similarly, Spanish carrier Iberia unveiled an app feature that will tell customers whether bags can be carried on or must be checked, after customers scan the bags with their phones.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Airlines tend to focus their apps on several core functions: the planning and </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/hotelbookingengines_onlinebookingengines.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">booking of flights</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, check-in, assistance in the case of a flight cancellation or other travel disruptions and loyalty program account management. </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Helping that traveler in a moment of crisis can earn loyalty and is a really important part of what the mobile app needs to be about.</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">  A mobile payment service provider that focuses on the airline industry, said carriers have also stepped up the payment options they offer via apps. But he noted that airline app teams compete for funding with carriers&#8217; other IT needs as well as with all manner of other needs. Companies are investing greatly into these mobile apps, but you can only do so much with competing agendas across the airlines.</span></p>

Looking ahead to 2020, I thought it was important to weigh three key areas. First, how technology might impact the </span><a href="https://www.provab.com"><span style="font-weight: 400;">travel sector</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> next overestimate or underestimate the impact that any single issue will have on business next year. Given all of this, here are my top predictions for the </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/travel-distribution-platform.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">travel industry</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in 2020.</span></p>
<p><b>As advertising delivery tools, chatbots and immediate messengers will effectively have an effect</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This has been happening outside the U.S., especially in China. We&#8217;re just beginning to see this trend with average customers taking hold. The popularity of Slack&#8217;s workplace-focused instant messaging platform with Silicon Valley will shift to the mainstream as they move to an IPO in 2019, bringing their cute and visual IM platform to an even wider business user base.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In turn, this will push more consumers to the interfaces of the instant messenger-style and serve as a way to conduct business, including </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/travelbookingenginedevelopment_travelreservationsystem.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">travel bookings</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The apps on your iPhone have already been provided by Apple as a gateway to connect via your text message application. Android and Facebook have also made available similar tool types.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It makes sense to conduct business with a chatbot from their favorite brand, </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/airline-booking-system.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">airline or hotel</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for a new mobile-first generation. Brands need time to catch up, but expect their early chatbots experiments to begin gaining traction with consumers in 2019.</span></p>
<p><b>A perfect storm of fresh technology, customer adoption and low-cost creation instruments will place large-scale programmatic video advertising on the media plan.</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This year, AT&amp;T has purchased AppNexus, the biggest autonomous publicity exchange, and they have large plans for next year&#8217;s programming television.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With free cloud video editing software and a variety of low-cost video advertising platforms available to companies of all sizes, 2019 will be the year programmatic video breaks out.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Yes, for regulating music and turning off the lights before you go to bed, they&#8217;re excellent fun. But, I believe voice assistants are just the Clapper&#8217;s modern-day version. My forecast is that </span><b>voice-powered user interfaces</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> will never get even a fraction of the commercial implementation that today&#8217;s modest but omnipresent mouse and keyboard commands. Okay, I might never be incorrect, but voice assistants will be a long way from working as a feasible travel reservation instrument in 2019. You don&#8217;t have to do that secretly from your phone or laptop at job anyway, in silence?</span></p>
<p><b>Online travel portals will not gain much traction with consumers in finding their &#8220;one destination for all travel purchases&#8221; approach.</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As they attempt to be a one-stop store for customer travel purchases, </span><a href="https://www.expedia.com/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Expedia</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and </span><a href="https://www.booking.com/index.en-gb.html?label=gen173nr-1DCAEoggI46AdIM1gEaGyIAQGYAQm4AQbIAQzYAQPoAQGIAgGoAgO4AtHx9OoFwAIB;sid=58cca14f14a8a43ed552e126301444c4;keep_landing=1&amp;sb_price_type=total&amp;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Booking.com</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are attempting to move into the attractions and ticketing room. Although highly logical, this strategy does not take into account the fickle nature of customers. Consumers enjoy shopping around. They like transactions. They like to read reviews, and their friends like to receive suggestions. We see this in Sojern&#8217;s own information assessment and customer route to buy for travel studies.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While the number of touch points varies greatly from person to person, the path they take is far from straightforward and can involve hundreds of searches across a variety of sites and applications. Instead, next year, attractions will boost their marketing directly to customers, not through portals, owing to the increasingly small obstacle to access to digital marketing technology.</span></p>
<p><b>You will not have to read another post about the effect of the block chain on travel</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We all saw this play of three acts before. Act One: On the fringes of computer studies, a </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/travel-technology.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">fresh technology</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is invented, and designers do not consider a mainstream advantage.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Act two: The technology matures to the point of attracting early adopters to evangelize it as a solution to the widest range of illnesses.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Act three: There is full disillusionment with the realization that the sky-high expectations are not going to be met, and this morphs into the fact that, yes, this technology offers real advantages, but only when we concentrate more on end-user requirements and less on technology.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I have no doubt that there will be a ton of papers on the effect of blockchain on next year&#8217;s travel, but will anything fresh be said to alter the game? I&#8217;m not predicting that.</span></p>

Consumers will find that autocorrect and </span><a href="https://app.grammarly.com"><span style="font-weight: 400;">grammar-checking tools</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> have transformed themselves into auto-sentence completion tools and will find them useful in improving phone typing.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They&#8217;ll like this fresh consumer-friendly face of AI because it makes it simpler to do all sorts of easy stuff on a desktop.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">AI has likely gone through the &#8220;</span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">trough of disillusionment&#8221;</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in the </span><b>Gartner hype cycle,</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and it is now finding a range of ways it can be helpful, such as data-mining previous aircraft maintenance records to enhance the capacity of a mechanic to diagnose and solve aircraft rather than replace them.</span></p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We have heard for the last 5 years that </span><b>IATA’s New Distribution Capability (NDC)</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> will drive a new era of airline retailing. This is the IATA message despite the fact that many airlines, especially the </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">European full service carriers (FSCs), have linked NDC to GDS bypass and the elimination of TMC/OTA</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> financial assistance. As mentioned on a recent BTN webinar, NDC adoption will require OTAs, metasearch, </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/corporate-travel-portal.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Corporate Online Booking Tools</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (OBTs) and TMC desktop point of sale systems (POS) to change, blending NDC unique offers with standard pricing from the GDS. Comparative shopping will be impacted as travelers try to evaluate different offers from carriers that bundle ancillary services or lower prices. So far, we’ve seen little evidence of any change in the way fares are displayed through indirect channels.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One area not discussed in the NDC effort is the significance of </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/hire-mobile-app-developer.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">mobile as a booking channel</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for managed travelers and how mobile airline apps could play a role in 1:1 marketing to the business traveler.  Over the last few years I have spoken to hundreds of travel managers at companies across the globe for various research projects.  Many travel managers still have trouble answering the basic question of how much leakage is going through supplier and </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/mobileapps-onlinetravelsoftware-otas.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">OTA mobile apps</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.  Often I find travel managers stuck in their 1990s/early 2000’s measurements of online booking adoption, and are not adequately tracking mobile bookings through supplier apps and OTAs which could significantly impact their traditional high adoption measurements.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There is no question that the three GDS are now committed to embracing NDC, but how long will it take to bring this rich content to the booking platform?  While the sector is struggling with this refresh technology, </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/airline-booking-system-amadeus-gds-integration.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">airline applications</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are already providing a platform for more custom deals. Will the airlines wait until NDC provides the personalization channel with rich content? The answer to this question depends on the Airline.  The FSCs in Europe – Lufthansa Group, IAG and AF/KLM are clearly leading the financial restructuring either though NDC direct connectivity or “private channels” that eliminate or greatly reduce “financial assistance”.  American has offered TMCs an incentive to use NDC direct connect. The slow roll out of Concur’s TripLink is clearly one important solution to bring airline.com and direct app bookings to the travel and expense management system, but adoption from corporate side has been slow.   The problem with both these solutions is that in an era of personalized NDC offers, understanding the Lowest Logical Airfare (LLA), a foundation comparison benchmark for effective travel management compliance and analysis, could be significantly disrupted. In fact it is likely some airlines will use their mobile app to offer unique ancillaries and possibly price to the business traveler whether they are part of a managed program or not.  Every corporation needs to have a handle on their mobile leakage and create negotiation strategies with their preferred carriers to prevent unique offers through the airline’s mobile app. Adding an air booking capability to a TMC app to solve this problem misses the very point of the airline controlling the quote, the essence of NDC. Corporations need to keep in mind that airline retailing is designed to increase the profitability of the carriers and thus may directly conflict with travel management objectives.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The topic of customization has never been warmer for the worldwide </span><a href="https://www.tripadvisor.in"><span style="font-weight: 400;">travel industry</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The amount of papers, conference topics and pitches for startups highlighting personalization has reached the cycle&#8217;s extreme hype stage. In reality, the theme of personalization has been around for decades. For the travel industry, personalization has its own set of barriers especially for the infrequent leisure traveler. Let’s take a deeper dive into the subject and separate the hype from the reality.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I recommended Broadvision back in the early 1990s, I first became engaged in the attempts to personalize the travel industry. Before the </span><b>burst of the DOTCOM bubble, </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Broadvision was the leading personalization platform. By 2000, Broadvision had contracts with major airlines (AA, TAM, Air Canada), Amadeus, EurailPass Forte Hotels, and IntraWest. Unfortunately, the Company’s fortunes were impacted hard by the DOTCOM bubble burst as their stock lost approximately 98% of its value by 2002. This did not mean the concept of personalization was dead, but instead indicated that the complex platform offered by Broadvision back in the 1990s was not able to meet the market’s needs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Traditionally, personalization uses two basic techniques: </span><b>explicit and implicit preferencing.</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Explicit preferencing asks the visitor to specify their preferences by selecting from a list of attributes such as “</span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">beach vacations</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">”, while implicit personalization gleans a traveler’s preferences by their online behavior and past purchases.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So why is there so much hype about personalization today? Three driving forces (1) the customer experience with other e-commerce sites like Amazon and Netflix, (2) the maturation of AI technologies (3) the growth of </span><a href="https://www.facebook.com"><span style="font-weight: 400;">social media</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Foremost on the AI front is the ability to analyze and understand vast amounts of unstructured data, including social media behavior. Incorporating unstructured data helps extend the knowledge of the customer, as well as providing better interpretation of supplier content (e.g. understanding the themes of customer reviews).  This may include using a Google-like search bar to ask a more detailed vacation request (e.g. New York Hotel with lap pool and close to Grand Central Station). Behind the scenes Natural Language Processing (NLP) is used to understand text, traveler intent and match the request with hotels that not only have a pool, but ones where lap swimming is possible.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With the limited frequency of most leisure travelers, rather than offering true 1:1 personalization, many companies try to micro-target specific types of travelers within a group/segment </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">(e.g. family, business, adventure travel, etc..).</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">  In general, the business travel segment is more attractive for personalization due to higher travel frequency and thus more data on the traveler’s preferences. In a </span><a href="https://www.provab.com/corporatewebdesign.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">corporate travel </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">managed context, the challenge of personalization is that it may put the traveler’s preferences against corporate policy.  Dependent on what level of detail of customer behavior is captured, the trade off between personalization versus “the creepiness factor” is still a struggle as well. In addition, the fact that travelers may project different personas for a given trip or within the same trip, further complicates the effort toward 1:1 personalization.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I would propose that a more important use of customer data is to provide support and services based on the traveler’s context.  Simply put, context is the immediate need of the traveler (e.g. what are they doing right now and what they will do next). Getting context right is extremely difficult.  In order to provide the right context, the travel supplier or intermediary needs to track the trip closely and provide services on a real time basis. For example, something as simple as a text message identifying local coffee shops received when the traveler awakes is an example of a contextually relevant message.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So don’t get caught up in the hype around personalization and instead focus on a traveler’s immediate needs based on intimate customer knowledge. The more </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">a supplier or intermediary can proactively communicate with a traveler throughout the travel cycle</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, the more effective the contextually relevant personalized communication can be and the more it provides a positive view of the supplier or intermediary.</span></p>

In the case of Facebook, the Chatbots would run through Messenger and act only as a personal virtual assistant. Find the latest news? Just ask CNN offered links to articles to send trends. Do you feel like listening to your favorite song? There is also (probably) a Bot for it. Natural language processing Bot is impressive. But what is even more interesting is the ability of making each interaction with a human being. Chatbots aren’t a thing of the future: they are here.</span></p>

It is only with this type of highly contextualized interactions that chat bot is used by the traveler and it really adds value to your trip.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If the value chat bots could bring to travellers is easy to see, the impact it could potentially have on the business side is often underrated. One airlines passenger can receive their boarding passes and flight information via Facebook Messenger. Digital boarding passes are not new. But to be able to actually talk to the support team of the airline by the messaging application is undoubtedly an attractive feature, especially if the chat bot is smart enough to reply to the queries of the travelers.</span></p>
